Instrument Repairs & Adjustments
If you have a problem with your string instrument, we recommend making an appointment for an instrument evaluation. Whether it’s basic maintenance — from gluing of an open seam to a new bridge — or damage caused by accident or neglect, Scherer Violins is passionate about the health of your instrument and investment.
-
Bow Rehairs
The quality and condition of your bow hair will impact the quality of tone and voice of your instrument. Some questions to ask yourself to help you identify whether or not your bow needs rehairing are: Has the bow hair stretched out? Has the bow hair collected dirt? Is your ribbon of bow hair getting narrow? Schedule in advance.
-
Appraisals
Verbal appraisals are no charge for instruments and bows of the violin family. Written appraisals for insurance include a description of the instrument, identifying details, and a replacement value based on current market prices. The cost of an written appraisal is 1% of the appraised value with a min of $65. Appointments only please.
Additional Repairs & Seasonal Maintenance
We recommend getting your instrument and bow evaluated every 6 months, or if any differences in playability are observed. Every instrument purchased from Scherer Violins includes a complementary seasonal checkup. During instrument checkups we check all the seams, the straightness and alignment of the bridge, look over the varnish for any needed touchup and make recommendations for repairs, if needed.
Be on the lookout for signs such as unusual sounds, persistent tuning issues, cracks in the wood, or damage to the bow. These indicators suggest that your instrument may need professional repairs. Ignoring these signs can lead to more significant problems, affecting your instrument’s sound and playability.
